Mayor launches Cape Town’s annual #SpringCleanCT campaign for 2023

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis launched the City’s annual #SpringCleanCT campaign for 2023 during a clean-up in Langa this morning. Residents are encouraged to get involved in community clean-ups, while the City will also scale-up area cleaning operations ahead of the busy tourism season.
Close to 200 000 additional bags of litter were collected across Cape Town last year as part of joint spring clean-up campaign efforts by the City, residents, civil society, schools, and businesses.
This year, the City will again scale-up cleaning operations in litter hotspots across the metro. Residents can get involved by organising clean-ups in their areas.
'Cape Town, it's time for our annual spring clean! Let's get our communities, parks, streets, waterways, and beaches looking sparkling clean this spring.
'The City will expand cleaning operations city-wide, and we need you to get involved by picking up litter or organising a spring clean in your area.
'Keep a look out for our new anti-litter mascot Bingo at a school or public place near you, and always remember to Bin it in the Bingo bin!' said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
The metro's new anti-litter mascot – Bingo – will be central to #SpringCleanCT efforts, with plans to take the message of keeping Cape Town clean to schools across the city.
Bingo was named following a public suggestion process, and is modelled on the City's green litter bins, of which there are several thousand across the city.
Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, joined the mayor at the #SpringCleanCT launch in Langa.
'We are expanding cleaning efforts along major routes and littering hotspots to prepare our city for the busy tourism season ahead.
'Our outreach teams will also be engaging residents in malls, schools, intersections and public places. Our simple message is to never litter, and always keep Cape Town clean,' said Alderman Twigg.
As part of the #SpringCleanCT campaign, a 24-hour toll-free number (0800 110077) is also available for residents to report illegal dumping tip-offs in exchange for a reward where this leads to arrests.
The City is further making major investments in Urban Waste Management services over the next three years, including:
· R755m to upgrade Urban Waste Management facilities, including landfills, drop-offs, waste to energy projects, recycling, and depots.
· R659 million for new refuse removal vehicles to ensure a reliable service
· R4,6bn on expanded area cleaning including street cleaning, beach cleaning, illegal dumping, events, and more
· R758m towards the goal of improved informal settlements waste management
